About Doorway
Doorway helps immigrants and non-native English speakers find English and language classes in the United States. We do not teach classes ourselves. We help you compare options and get matched, for free, with welcoming schools and ESL programs near you or online.
Our mission
Moving to a new country takes courage. Learning English as an adult takes courage too. Doorway exists to make that step easier.
We are a free matching service for people in the US who want help finding English and language programs. Some students want everyday English for work, school, or daily life. Others want conversation practice, academic English, or help preparing for a test or interview. Whatever your goal, we help you understand your options and take the next step with confidence.
We believe multilingual people bring strength to their families, workplaces, and communities. You should be able to ask questions, compare programs, and choose a school that feels right for you.
If you are ready to start, you can get matched for free. If you are still exploring, you can learn more about different ESL class options first.
What Doorway does, and what Doorway does not do
Doorway helps you find and compare language-learning options. We are not a school, college, ESL center, or immigration service.
What we do:
- Help you share your goal, preferred schedule, and contact details
- Match you with welcoming language schools or programs that may fit your needs
- Help you compare format options such as in-person, online, part-time, intensive, group, or tutoring
- Offer information in simple language so it is easier to understand your choices
What we do not do:
- We do not teach classes or issue certificates
- We do not decide your English level or guarantee learning results
- We do not give legal, visa, green card, or citizenship eligibility advice
- We do not ask for bank account numbers, Social Security numbers, or immigration documents to get matched
If you have questions about visas, immigration status, or citizenship eligibility, please speak with a licensed immigration attorney or accredited representative. Language learning support and immigration legal advice are different services.
Before you enroll anywhere, always confirm the school's accreditation or licensing, total price, class schedule, and refund policy directly with the school. You can also use our guide on how to choose a language school.
Who Doorway is for
Doorway is for many kinds of learners across the United States.
You may be a good fit if you are:
- A new immigrant who wants English for daily life
- A parent who wants to speak with teachers, doctors, or neighbors more easily
- A worker who wants stronger workplace English
- A student looking for academic English or structured classes
- Someone searching for online classes because of work, childcare, or transportation
- A beginner who feels nervous and wants a welcoming place to start
- An intermediate or advanced learner who wants more practice or test preparation
Many students are surprised to learn that free or low-cost ESL classes may exist nearby through libraries, adult schools, community colleges, faith groups, and nonprofits. Other students prefer private language schools with more schedules, smaller groups, or faster-paced courses.
Typical costs vary by school, city, program length, and format. Many community-based adult ESL classes are free or under about $200. Private language schools often range from about $200 to $1,500 per course or level. Online tutoring often ranges from about $15 to $60 per hour. Test-prep classes may range from about $100 to $800. These are only common examples, not quotes or guarantees. For free options, see free ESL classes.
How matching works
Getting help from Doorway is simple.
- Tell us your goal. For example: beginner English, conversation, online classes, evening schedule, or citizenship interview practice.
- Share basic contact details. We only need enough information to help connect you with possible programs.
- Review your options. We help you see programs that may fit your location, schedule, and learning goals.
- Contact the school and ask questions. You decide where to apply or enroll.
This service is free to the student. You are not paying Doorway to be matched.
When comparing programs, it helps to ask:
- What level is this class for?
- What days and times are available?
- Is the program online, in person, or both?
- What is the full cost, including books or fees?
- Is the school accredited or licensed?
- What is the refund policy if plans change?
If you are unsure which class format fits your life, our page on class formats can help you compare common options.
How Doorway is paid
Doorway's matching service is free for students.
Participating schools pay Doorway a flat fee to be part of our matching network. That means you can use Doorway without paying us for a match.
Our goal is to make your search easier, not to pressure you. You compare programs. You choose where to enroll.
Even when you find a program through Doorway, you should still protect yourself by confirming key details directly with the school before you pay:
- Accreditation or state licensing
- Tuition and any extra fees
- Start dates and class schedule
- Attendance expectations
- Refund and cancellation policy
A good program should be clear, respectful, and willing to answer your questions.
Doorway helps you find English and language classes in the US. The service is free for students. Doorway is not a school and does not give legal advice. You can share your goal, compare programs, and choose the school that works best for you.
