What Doorway does

Doorway is not a school. We do not teach classes, give grades, or issue certificates. We help you find programs that may fit what you need.

You tell us your goal, like everyday English, work English, online study, or test prep. Then we help match you with welcoming language schools, ESL centers, and other programs near you or online.

Our job is to make the search easier. Your job is to compare your options and decide what feels right for you. If you want to start, you can get matched.

Many students ask us about free classes too. In many cities, free or low-cost adult ESL classes are available through libraries, adult schools, community colleges, faith groups, and nonprofits. You can also read about common options on our ESL classes page.

How the matching process works

Here is the basic process:

1. Tell us your goal. Maybe you want beginner English, conversation practice, citizenship test preparation, online classes, or a program near home or work.
2. Share basic contact details. We only need simple information to help with matching and follow-up, such as your name, preferred language, phone, email, and where you want to study. We do not need bank information, Social Security numbers, or immigration documents.
3. We look for possible matches. We may connect you with participating schools or programs that fit your goal, location, schedule, and preferences.
4. You compare options. Ask about class times, teacher support, online or in-person format, cost, level, and start dates.
5. You contact the school and decide. You choose whether to enroll. There is no obligation to sign up with any school.

If you are not sure what kind of class you need, it may help to read about class formats first. Some students do best in a classroom. Others need online evening classes because of work or childcare.

You stay in control

Doorway is here to support your search, but you stay in control the whole time.

• You choose what goal to share.
• You choose which schools or programs to speak with.
• You choose whether to enroll.
• You choose what works for your schedule, budget, and comfort level.

Before you pay or sign anything, always confirm these details directly with the school:

• accreditation or licensing
• total price and any extra fees
• class schedule and start date
• online or in-person format
• placement testing, if any
• refund or cancellation policy

What it costs you

Doorway is free for students. There is no cost to use our matching service.

The classes themselves may be free, low-cost, or higher-cost depending on the provider. These are typical ranges and examples only, not quotes or guarantees:

• Many adult ESL classes at libraries, nonprofits, adult schools, and some community programs are free or under about $200.
• Private language schools often charge about $200 to $1,500 per course or level.
• Online tutoring commonly ranges about $15 to $60 per hour.
• Test-prep classes, such as citizenship or English exam prep, often range about $100 to $800.

Costs vary by city, school, schedule, and program length. Always confirm the current price and refund policy with the school before enrolling or paying.
